Throughout this semester, we have emphasized classroom culture. Which component do you think is the most important (growth mindset, what it means to be a good group member or student led discussions) to creating a classroom culture and why?
I really think that it’s important for nobody to be left behind. I can say from experience that when you get left behind it really bums you out. You start to do worst in math and also tend to dislike any group work. Having mindset of nobody getting left behind is amazing, everyone tends to be really helpful. Apart from many people feel comfortable in class rather than just sitting in corner trying to struggle through a problem.
-
How have you changed as a group member?
I want to say that this year I’ve really push myself to try to be a good group member. I didn’t want anybody to be left behind so I really tried my best to live up to the effort. I became much more comfortable working with a group rather than myself as well. Working in a group became fun rather just a burden.
-
Why do you think we pushed so much on group work and creating a classroom culture?
I think every good piece of work is always done in teams. It’s a good way for us to learn how to work in groups for our own good. In the future most jobs consist of working in a group or a partner. We have to get use to it and learn how to work in a good in a positive way. It’s a good skill to have, but also a great way to find fun in a social aspect.
-
What is your greatest strength as a group member? What is an area of growth within group work?
I think my greatest strength as a group member would be to help others out and make sure everyone is on the same page. It’s kind of hard to explain, but I like to encourage everyone to try to be on the same page so that way we can all make progress without nobody being left behind. I also like to ask questions in my group to help the ones teaching me understand the problem more.
-
Name a specific moment (an assignment, a test, a problem, a conversation, a discussion, etc) that defined your math experience for this semester?
I really enjoyed taking my first group test! I never felt so comfortable with a group of people ever before. I felt like we really wanted to be there helping each other. Nobody went ahead and really made sure to help each to our full effort. We all tried to be on the same page and made sure everyone understood the problem rather than just doing useless work. I felt like this should be how math is rather than just boring work.
-
What were some challenges you encountered with all of the changes we have made with math? What suggestions do you have to change them?
I think one of the challenges was taking the time to ask questions in my group and class. I been really use to just taking notes and just staying quiet for the whole math period. When group work was introduce I became very nervous rather than exciting. I didn’t know what to expect, I wasn’t good at group work either. With my first group I really struggled just to talk to everyone. I didn’t want to work anybody, just myself. After couple of weeks I really broke out my shell, and really took the time to grow closer to my math table.

What goals do you have for next semester?
I really want to focus on breaking the shell and try to ask questions more often in class. I know I’ve taken a small step already by breaking the shell inside any type of group work, now I just need to take another step and hopefully manage to complete this goal by next semester.
